Case Study: Windows And Doors Installation – Berkshire Hospital

We’re very pleased to show you another example of our work. Reading Trade Windows, alongside our partners at Abbey Windows, we helped install a new set of windows and doors in the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The children’s accident and emergency unit had a standard set of doors that were thought to be too ‘clinical,’ so we were asked to improve it.

The hospital staff were keen for the area to be expanded to include space for vending machines and ensure it no longer led directly into a waiting room. We worked closely with the hospital and gave the entranceway a fresh upgrade. As you can see from the photos, the results speak for themselves.

Updated Aluminium Doors

When we started this project, we soon learned that the existing doors were no longer at their best. The materials showed signs of wear and tear, and a refit was necessary to prevent long-term issues. We liaised with the hospital and they agreed that a fresh set of aluminium doors was the right choice.

When creating these doors, we had to consider several design choices that we don’t always see on residential properties. The doors had to be easily accessible, so we built them with a low threshold to ensure that children could comfortably access the hospital in an emergency.

Due to the hectic nature of A&E wards, the hospital also felt that our sliding patio doors were their best option. These were fitted with sensors to open automatically, giving the ward an efficient, modern entrance. We were also asked to include anti-finger trap stylings in the frame because of the young age of the patients.

They had to be very precise with choosing a colour scheme too; a hospital entrance needs to exude professionalism and hygiene to reassure patients. It’s not a place for flashier shades, so a basic white was the natural decision.

AluK Aluminium

Alongside Abbey Windows, we consulted the hospital and supplied them with products from the AluK product range. These modern installations were perfect for the hospital, as their thermally efficient profiles reduce draughts and offer exceptional heat retention. Energy efficiency is always a priority for us, but it was especially important for this project; sitting in A&E is not pleasant, and we wanted the hospital’s visitors to be as comfortable as possible.

In order to minimise the disruption to the hospital, we supplied the doors quickly and efficiently. The end result was a modern but welcoming entrance to the children’s accident and emergency.
